DIVINE MOSAIC

Experiencing Wholeness through Embracing Difference

Paul G. Chandler

In this presentation, Paul G. Chandler encourages a worldview that embodies an openness to learn proactively from those different than ourselves, in order to experience a fresh sense of wholeness, both for individuals and communities. The backdrop for his presentation is today’s climate of increasing prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination, what some are calling a new “tribalism.” Chandler addresses our polarized culture which too often puts people into “other” categories, and how this can lead to dehumanizing those different than ourselves, whether in worldviews, words or actions - related to ethnicity, culture or spiritual tradition.

Chandler shares from his experience of focusing on interreligious and intercultural bridgebuilding around the world for most of his life. In our world that offers increased opportunities of relationship with those of other cultures and faiths, Chandler demonstrates that one of the greatest explorations we can be on, is to experience a deeper spiritual dimension through friendships with those of different faith and cultural backgrounds.

Having lived in North Africa surrounded by Roman mosaics of early antiquity, Chandler came to see the world as a breathtakingly beautiful “divine mosaic,” where each little chip or piece in the mosaic is a different cultural or spiritual expression. He advocates for all the diverse pieces to be visible, which he believes leads to a new sense of wholeness for everyone.

Artwork: Throughout this inspiring presentation, Chandler highlights artwork from premier contemporary artists of different faith traditions.
